BNN documentary about Wallen
I suddenly found out that BNN has made a documentary about De Wallen in Amsterdam. This documentary is mostly in English (with Dutch subtitles), so I believe most people in the world will comprehend the documentary. It is a part of a series called 'Je zal het maar zijn' (this means something like: Imagine that you are this way). This episode about De Wallen is called 'Afl. 1 - de Wallen anno 2012 - Thema: De wallen anno 2012'. Sophie Hilbrand interviews a Bulgarian female prostitute called Lina, a Polish male prostitute called Mark and some Australian young men who want to visit prostitutes on De Wallen in Amsterdam.
Obviously, I am most interested in the story of Lina. Four years ago she wanted to work voluntarily in prostitution, but she ended up being exploited on De Wallen by a pimp anyway. She escaped (via a client), and since two years ago she works independently as a prostitute on De Wallen. She estimates that 80% of the prostitutes on De Wallen have pimps. She also says that many tourists on De Wallen are jerks who don't respect the women behind the windows. She says that behind every girl you see behind the windows there is some really sad story.
Overall this is not a very positive story, but it is good that she won her independence back. And she has found a nice circle of friends in the Netherlands (mostly foreigners it seems) who are also interviewed in the documentary.
(In the second edition of the magazine S-work - magazine for sex workers published in 2012 by the Red Thread, it is actually explained that Lina escaped 4 years ago from her pimp after being exploited by him for one month. She already worked in prostitution in Bulgaria. She is 26 years old, and her boyfriend works in a restaurant, and thanks to him she got her life back on track. She says plenty of Bulgarian girls still have a pimp.)

And in case you missed it, there's also this documentary (not related to BNN):
The documentary is called Red Light Blues - A documentary by Izzy Abrahami - Is this the swan song of Amsterdam's Red Light District (Abrahami-netz TV productions, released in 2008 or so). It is about the famous red light district in Amsterdam, called the 'Wallen'. Also some prostitutes are interviewed.
