A Polish woman wants to work as a prostitute but becomes trapped

A human trafficking story once a week. I will fulfill my oath. And, I finally found out a proper translation of ‘aangifte doen bij the politie’. That should be: lodging a complaint at/to the police. That’s most accurate. So, that means I will have to change some text soon on my blog. Okay, the new story. A very short one. It’s from one of the Nationaal Rapporteur’s reports. The third one actually, the one from 2004 (see page 116 for the story).
Mensenhandel — Derde rapportage van de Nationaal Rapporteur (2004), page 116
The Polish Z. gets from Y., via a friend, the question if she wants to work in the Netherlands as a prostitute. Y. indicates that the earnings will be split equally between them and that he will offer her protection and a workplace. Y. impressed upon Z that she could earn 270 Euro per day. At that moment she lives of 38 Euro per month and has in prospect a salary of at most 54 Euro per month. With this image in mind Z agrees with the proposal. After arriving in the Netherlands she lives in with Y. She is being locked in however and can make contact with nobody. Each evening she has to work as a prostitute and Y. molests her physically and sexually when he is not satisfied about the earnings. Also bodyguard X. beats her if she doesn’t work well. He verifies how many clients she has per night and how long they are with her. Contrary to the agreement she has to hand over all the earned money to Y., who then gives a part to X. After working nonstop for one and a half month Z asks for a couple of free days to rest a little. Y. refuses and when Z. then has to keep on working while she is ill she decides to leave. With the help of another prostitute she is able to flee and lodge a complaint to the police. (…)
The story ends when she is given a lawyer by the JOS project. The suspect is sentenced to six years in jail and a fine of 679 Euro. Also X is convicted.

And, what have we learned?

That also women who want to work as prostitutes can end up in bad circumstances.

And what have I learned?

To never visit a prostitute again because she can be a victim of human trafficking.

I have to reiterate this to myself every week because I will forget. And, translating a story into English makes it better to understand for me. And I have to acknowledge that I thought about visiting the Red Light District in Amsterdam again last Friday. I have to persist. My conscience will win. I am a righteous person.

Bulgarian prostitutes in the north of the Netherlands

I found another more or less readable file from the website. It contains testimonies of victims in the presence of reporting officers, not literally but ´soberly described´. The case is from only two years ago but the things that happened were from much earlier. Too bad, we will never have present-day information this way, it will always be outdated.

What´s interesting is that Bulgarian prostitutes describe more or less independently how they were exploited by the same person. So this is a case where you can be quite sure that this is for real and not some fabrication. Also interesting is, and this is what surprises me, is that the women tell they really didn´t know that they were going to become prostitutes but that they found out later. So this makes me wonder are there still girls behind these windows who were tricked to become prostitutes? The common wisdom nowadays is that women in Eastern Europe generally know that they will become prostitutes when they are going to work here. However, this case is from a long time ago, so this could have changed.

It is interesting how the situation now is for Bulgarian prostitutes because nowadays they could travel freely to the Netherlands and work here as independent contractors.

PS: The interrogated prostitutes tell about some brothels they worked in. With the house with window displays in Heerenveen they probably mean ‘Club 88’ in the Munnikstraat 6 which is a brothel with indoor window prostitution. The sex club in Sneek is probably Club Aphrodite at the Prins hendrikkade 13.

A report of [Witness A] on the day of 8 November 2005, recorded on page 3198ev of a criminal file with the number 07-007080 RET-001 on the day of 27 February 2009 (Muurbloem), with as testimony of the one who made a report [Witness A] in the presence of the reporting officers, soberly [?] described:

I wanted to go away from my village. Via the daughter of a discotheque owner (Silvia) I came into contact with [Suspect]. He said that I could make a lot of money and that I could leave early. A week later we went again to [Suspect], I had had to put on beautiful clothes then and they wanted to know if I had a passport. On 15 May 2003 I went with Sylvia again to [Suspect]. We went to his café in Sofia. I knew then that I would go the Netherlands, that was what Silvia said. The next day I went with [Suspect] in his car to the Netherlands. The 17th we arrived in the Netherlands. [Suspect] told me en route what kind of work I was going to do. He said that I could make € 1.000,- per day in prostitution. He had paid that money for me and I had to pay that back first. He would arrange the papers for me but I had to pay back € 30.000,- for that. I didn’t want to go back home because I was beaten by my father there. So I had to persevere. In the Netherlands we went via Deventer to Heerenveen. In Deventer [Suspect] has collected money at Blondi. In Heerenveen I was in a house with Teodora and Monika. In that house there were display windows. Monika had arranged a display window for me. [Suspect] then drove me through to Groningen. There I was in a room above the windows in the Muurstraat. The next day we went to Heerenveen again. Monika wrote on a little paper which prices I had to hold on to. I felt terrible behind the windows but I couldn’t flee. I had to pay back [Suspect]. [Suspect] dropped by every day at the end of the day to collect the money that I had earned that day. The first weeks he picked me up on Sunday and then I was allowed to rest at his home in Groningen. He called me a number of times a day on a telephone that I got from him to ask how much I had earned already.

I have worked for 6 months for [Suspect]. Then came Nadiya. She has then worked for [Suspect].
Later [Suspect] said that also Boryana came to work for him. I heard that Boryana fled after a week and that [Suspect] had traced her in Bulgaria and had beaten her up.
I have worked for another 3 months in club [Club A] in Sneek. After this, Nadiya arranged for me that I could work for an escort company in Groningen. [Person Concerned J] arranged for [Suspect] a residence permit for me, that was rejected however.
I have worked in total from 16 May 2003 until jan/feb 2004 for [Suspect].
[Suspect] called me to control me, but the girls also controlled each other acting upon the instructions of [Suspect]. I once have transferred money to my mother. [Suspect] found that out and then has threatened me to throw me off the stairs. He was terribly angry and wanted to kill me. I was very afraid of [Suspect]. I think that I gave approximately € 40.000,- to [Suspect]. That was nett, the costs of the display windows etcetera I had already paid. In February 2004 I stopped sending money to [Suspect]. He then called me regularly. He also sent me SMS messages: ‘do you know who I am and what I could do with you!’
I skipped some here
A report of interrogation of [Witness D] on the day of 25 September 2008, recorded on page 3218ev of the under 1. named criminal file, from which as testimony of the witness [Witness D] in the presence of the reporting officers, soberly [?] described:

I am afraid of [Suspect] and therefore have not previously testified truthfully.
At the end of July 2001 I came into contact with [Suspect] in the disco. I could work for him in a hotel in the Netherlands. I was pregnant then. [Suspect] later paid for my abortion, I had to pay back these costs to him.
I departed on 1 August 2001 with [Suspect] in a bus to the Netherlands.
[Suspect] showed me the windows in Groningen. I was shocked and said that I was to going work in a hotel. He said that he made expenses for me and that I had to work for him in prostitution to pay it back to him. I went working as a prostitute. The amounts of money that I had to ask was what [Suspect] told me. He checked how much I earned. When I didn’t make enough money I had to keep on working longer. I have told [Suspect] once that I would rather like to stop. He said that this was really not possible because he was for me in the Netherlands and he had costs. I have worked until March 2002 for [Suspect]. I have earned approximately Fl. 50.000,- in a half a year. Of this I had to carry the expenses myself. The rest was for [Suspect]. When I earned too little [Suspect] became angry and he told me to work harder.
A report of interrogation of [Witness E] on the day of 14 October 2008, recorded on page 3341ev of the under 1. named criminal file, from which as testimony of the witness [Witness D] in the presence of the reporting officers, soberly [?] described:

I am afraid of reprisals and therefore have not previously testified truthfully.
[Suspect] has arranged everything for me. [Suspect] paid my passport. He told me that I would work in prostitution in the Netherlands. [Suspect] paid the bus ride. [Witness H] has collected me in Groningen from the bus. [Suspect] told me how working was in prostitution. [Witness H] told me what prices I should ask. [Suspect] indicated I had a debt with him and that I had to pay him back. I had to hand over 50% of my earned money to him.
A report of interrogation of [Witness F] on the day of 8 October 2008, recorded on page 3347ev of the under 1. named criminal file, from which as testimony of the witness [Witness F] in the presence of the researchers of the Nationale Onderzoeksdienst in Sofia (Bulgaria), soberly [?] described:

I have worked in 2001 in Groningen in prostitution. I met [Suspect] in Bulgaria. He would arrange one thing and another, amongst other things the trip. I had to pay him back later.
[Suspect] collected me from the bus station in the Netherlands. We drove with the car to the place where I was going to work. I had to go with a girl to the police to register myself. I got papers there. I have stayed in Groningen for approximately two or three months in Groningen. I have also stood behind the windows. I felt dependent on [Suspect] and the others. The little bit of money that I earned went to [Suspect].
I hope this case scares me off. I know understand why I am a anti-prostitution crusader. I have no other choice, I would lose myself believing prostitution is harmless.

Okay, now go on. Every week a forced prostitution story.

No forced prostitution in the Doubletstraat

I didn't mention that a couple of days ago (April the 8th 2011) 350 policemen (!!!!!) and 50 civil servants invaded the window prostitution street called the Doubletstraat in The Hague. There are 163 windows in that street. 157 prostitutes (!!!!) were taken to the city hall. The women mainly came from Bulgaria, Hungary and South America. Here is a link to an article in the NRC:

Now, that all the women have been interviewed and all the information is processed, the conclusion:

All the 157 prostitutes whom the police have interviewed during that evening and night have stated that they are not victims of human trafficking and that they do this work voluntarily. See this news item:

I don't know. Perhaps I could become very cynical again. I think Comensha too. They arranged emergency shelter for all the victims.

I would say that the women are so afraid that they don't dare to tell. They usually see the ones who exploit them as their friends or lovers. They usually see it as their duty to pay off their virtual debts.

On the other hand, perhaps I could just take a visit to the Doubletstraat. Perhaps that human trafficking thing is really just a big myth.

This is not good for my sex addiction.

am a rapist.

Nigerian forced prostitute on de Wallen

Well, while I'm still busy I could better post this one immediately. It's about a Nigerian woman who was promised to become a cleaner by the recruiter but then was forced to work as a prostitute in the Netherlands to pay off a debt of 50.000 Euros. She also worked on de Wallen in Amsterdam. It all began in 1999 and it took 6 years until she fled. This is a kind of classical human trafficking story and, to be honest, my gut feeling tells me it is a fake story. But who knows???
Here's the link (15 April 2011, "slachtoffer mensenhandel: ik had geen keus",

And here's an embedded video where she tells the story in English:

Another video is also interesting. An Eastern European prostitute tells (in English!) about her work behind the windows on de Achterdam in Alkmaar and Annet Koopsen, a lawyer for victims of human trafficking, says (in Dutch) that victims tell her that all prostitutes have a pimp, the pimps decides when to work and where the money goes. Same old story. Is it true??? Who knows??? I hope it will scare me off for a while.

You can find the video here (it is in Dutch):
(RTV Noord Holland,  20 December 2010, "Exploitant van de Achterdam gaat met pensioen", below you can find the video with the name: "10 minuten over de Achterdam")

Land of broken promises

I want to draw some stories about forced prostitutes from the paper written by Judith Vocks and Jan Nijboer at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. It is called ‘Land van Belofte’ [land of promise] and is named after a café in a window prostitution street of Groningen. The paper is quite old, from 1999. But what’s interesting is that they held 12 interviews with former victims of forced prostitution from Eastern Europe who have been forced to work in the Netherlands. Some 72 former victims filled in a questionnaire. Of the 64 who answered the question of what kind of work was promised, 29 said work in prostitution was promised, 8 were kidnapped, 8 work in the catering industry, 6 work as entertainer, 5 were sold, 3 housekeeper, 2 au pair, 1 administrative work, 1 vacation, and 1 rest (that is THE rest).

But the 12 interviewed former victims of forced prostitution are the most interesting. Some short descriptions are given about how they got into this situation. Some already worked in prostitution or planned to work in prostitution in the Netherlands.

The writers divide the victims in three groups, placing them within a pyramid. The small top consists of the kidnapped women (among them also some women who already worked in prostitution), a middle group are the deceived women who didn’t know, and the big base of the pyramid consists of the exploited prostitutes who did know.

The writers try to find an explanation why Eastern European women are forced into prostitution. They put heavy weight on the explanation that the strongly patriarchal societies in Eastern Europe cause this. This is in line with explanation given by TAMPEP and John Davies. It explains that Eastern European women will behave very submissively towards human traffickers because being submissive, especially towards men, is what they were taught to do during their upbringing. This is what human traffickers are aware of and they exploit this.

Another explanation given by the writers is that the women have little to lose given the circumstances in the countries of origin. This is also true for the women who already worked in prostitution in their countries of origin where the circumstances for prostitutes are usually bad. Also many women come from broken families.

I usually forget a lot that I read about prostitution. I want to know how the foreign prostitutes who knew what kind of work they would do are treated. So the coming period I want to delve into that on my blog. Especially because I feel very attracted to these women. When I see them I find the so HOT!!!!! Much cooler than these grumpy Dutch and Latin American prostitutes. Perhaps it can stem my sex addiction and my interest in these Eastern European women this way. Time for a first quote (all translated from Dutch by the way):
“When our trader took us for the first time to De Wallen in Amsterdam we didn’t know what we saw! We ourselves were put behind a window and felt just like livestock that was being inspected by the clients who passed by. In my home country you at least can have a drink with your client before you go to work, here it is assembly line work.
Okay that comes in hard. First lesson for me: the girls smile but actually hate it when you treat them as cattle. Next quote:
M is born in a small city in the Czech Republic [probably Czechoslovakia]. Her parents are divorced when she is four years old. M and her little brother continued to live with her mother whom after a couple of years got a new boyfriend. M has often seen that her mother is heavily molested by this man. Her mother gave birth to two more children of this man. M finished primary school and later started a technical education. M herself was often molested by her mother and she always had the feeling that her mother didn’t love her. She could get along well with her father but she had little contact with him. On the age of seventeen she ran away from home and stopped with her education. She slept for a while at several girlfriends and worked in a bread factory. After three months she resigned there because the work was too physically demanding. Her real father at that moment also didn’t have a fixed place to stay and couldn’t give shelter to her. After a couple of weeks she got to know P, a Russian man. He lived and worked in a nightclub in Teplice, a medium-sized city near the border. M went to live with him in the nightclub and at first worked as a dancer. At the advice of her boyfriend she went to work as a prostitute. She gladly wanted to be near him and do everything for him. M and her boyfriend got into trouble with the club owner about finances and they moved to another club. P turned out to be a jealous man and he regarded M as his property. M accepted this because she wasn’t used to anything different. After all, her mother was also molested this often by her stepfather. Above all M was very much in love with P. Two months later P proposed that M would work in prostitution in the Netherlands. In the first instance she refused but when a couple of months later she turned out to be pregnant of P, she saw no other option. After all, in the room where they lived together there was no space to raise a child. M had no diploma and she couldn’t keep up with the heavy labour in a factory for a minimum wage, especially now that she was pregnant. M now did want to go to the Netherlands to make money there to buy a house for the baby, P and herself. P contacted the club owner where M earlier on worked as a prostitute for five months. He promised M that she would earn 3000 guilders per month. In the Netherlands, so he said, you can easily earn 1000 or 1500 guilders per day. The agreement eventually was that M had to earn 1000 guilders a day. That wouldn’t be a problem because with 15 clients per evening that money came easily and there were also enough clients. He painted the work as simple. M was supposed to work in the Netherlands for three months. Two months later M went with the brother of the club owner to the Netherlands. The club owner arranged a false passport for her. Once she arrived in a medium-sized city in the Netherlands M could go straight to work after a meal. That same evening M worked from 23:00 hours till 04:00 hours at night. She only earned 300 guilders. The man who had brought her and yet another man constantly kept an eye on her. The next evening M had to start at 19:00 every time. By both men she only was allowed to stop if she had earned 1000 guilders, which meant that she had to go on until 06:00 and finish more than 25 men. This was practically impossible since in many cases there weren’t always clients present and M couldn’t physically cope with it. The men continued to control and threat her. After approximately a month – after the man molested another girl – M decided to report to the police. All that time M didn’t receive more that some pocket money for food and drink.
Shocking, how could I abuse such a person whose only choice is to prostitute? I’m a jerk. I raped her, because she needs my money. And: the Stockholm syndrome really exists. Next quote:
‘I’ [nickname] worked from the age of eighteen as a waitress in a nightclub. She got into debts and decided to work for a period as a prostitute to pay that off. She did already have regular sexual contacts and therefore expected to have no problems with the nature of the work. After working for five months in a club ‘I’ was from one day to another sold by the club owners to a pimp who brought her to the Netherlands. ‘I’ didn’t want to go abroad at all but was brought to the Netherlands under force in a car. From that moment on the money that she earned was seized by the pimp.
Next lesson: women who already work in prostitution could be kidnapped and forced into prostitution too. Next quote:
O rolled into prostitution via an acquaintance of her housemate. The pimp whom she worked for proposed to her at one moment to work abroad for a while. The man painted the worked as very lucrative. O also at that time has had some problems with her health because she has worked on the street. In the Netherlands, so her pimp told, she will get her own room and she doesn’t need to work on the street again. O agrees and departs with her pimp and also three other girls to the Netherlands. Once in the Netherlands O must work long days by the window owner and her old pimp and hand in all her money. O isn’t allowed to refuse men or refuse certain acts. Her workroom is also her living space and without supervision she isn’t allowed to walk around freely. When O is allowed by both men to also have no contact with a client whom she has fallen in love with, it becomes too much for her. After the window owner has threatened her with a pistol and has molested her because she secretly made an appointment with that client, she flees to the police.
Next lesson: the window brothel owners are big fat human traffickers, and the prostitutes who work there are their victims. I ‘m a jerk to abuse these women. Next quote:
On her fifteenth birthday O was sold for the first time by her mother to a pimp. After three days she ran away and went back to her mother again. That was also the agreement with her mother. The mother of O namely is a women trafficker. She sells prostitutes to pimps to maintain her gambling addiction this way. O was sold and escaped eight times in total. At the end she ended up in the Netherlands and was rescued by the police. O doesn’t want to go back to her home country but she still does have contact with her mother….
Next lesson: also women force women into prostitution, even their sons and daughters. The nice madam is a myth. Next quote:
T was invited by her boyfriend for a weekend trip to celebrate her seventeenth birthday. T never has had sex and at first doubted if she would accompany him. She eventually did go with him and to her horror she ended up in a sex club. Her boyfriend sold her – in her presence – to a club owner. Two months later T was sold on to a trader who put her to work in the Netherlands.
Next lesson: even boyfriends sell their girlfriends into prostitution. Next quote:
When I ask L why she came to the Netherlands in the first instance, she looks at me a bit cynical and says: “for an excursion”. L together with a female friend came to the Netherlands to view the country for three days. Her friend wanted to set up a company in the Netherlands and invited her to come along.
Next lesson: some girls really are kidnapped. Next quote:
Y is a woman from one of the former Soviet States. She has followed a professional dance education from the age of seven. She was invited by her male cousin to work as a professional show dancer in England. Her father at first instance didn’t give permission but after weeks of pushing she eventually was allowed to go. During a stopover in the Czech republic it was explained to her what her real destination of the journey would be.
Yes some women are tricked (seems to be happening not so often nowadays). Next quote:
“After going a night out I was dragged into the car of a trafficker and raped by two men. After that they told me that if I would tell anybody me and my family would be murdered. From that moment on I had to work as a prostitute. Half a year later I was sold to another trafficker in Germany. After three months I was brought to the Netherlands to work for this trafficker.
Conclusion: I’m a big fat asshole. And I mustn’t abuse these vulnerable women.

Now I must persist.

A human trafficking story, every week.

A new plan

For the past year I have become totally hooked on sex workers. So much that if I am in an area of the Netherlands where I know a brothel is very close by, I have the desparate urge to go to there. I can't think of nothing else. It has hijacked my brains. I even dream of visiting brothels; walking through the red light districts. I even dreamt a couple of times that I discovered there is a red light district with window brothels in the village I live in!!!

There is no red light district in the village I live in.

My sense of pity for forced prostitutes has almost totally disappeared. I even fantasize of visiting one of these young women in window brothels of whom I know it is very likely that they are coerced. In my fantasy I don't care anymore. Lately I even went to de Wallen and visited a woman whom I thought was very young. She wasn't. She told me she was 29. I turned out (by looking at the she was 33 or 34. I was lucky. She was from Slovakia. I believe she has surely paid off her virtual debts a long time ago.

It seems that from now on I have to convince MYSELF (not others!) that forced prostitution is the real thing! So, I plan to look into my file with over a 1000 cases of forced prostitution in the Netherlands, and post one trafficking story perhaps once or twice a week. I will focus on the stories where prostitutes planned to work in prostitution but were exploited later on. These are, as far as I know, the most common cases of forced prostitution. It will give a picture of what forced prostitution really looks like.

Stay tuned.

Saturday, April 02, 2011

I found something very interesting on the website and it shows how at least one trafficking gang operated. Perhaps it also tells how other gangs operate. The files contains long transcriptions of hearings of women who have been exploited in prostitution, contrary to many other which just contain all the accusations in staccato which makes it an awful read. This file is also important for me because in this case one will be very sure this is for real and not a case where some jealous prostitutes turn their former boyfriends over to the police. Many women independently confirm what’s going on. And, above all, it is also important to let prostitutes speak for themselves. Usually you hear stories about prostitutes being directly forced into prostitutes or stories about women who are romantically seduced by a man and then manipulated to work in prostitution. Actually, it is known that in by far most cases forced prostitution happens on some kind of dodgy-contract-basis where the women know they will be working in prostitution but are still abused and exploited. But to be honest, the information about actual cases like this is usually very sketchy and only few tips of the veil are raised. Reading this story on makes you wonder once again how one should label forced and voluntary. It also seems that some prostitutes are treated better than others by the very same pimp. Prostitutes in this have an agreement that 50% of the earnings is for them. First they have to hand over all their earnings to him. He promises to pay out half of that money later. Many times that money is indeed paid out, so they are not left entirely empty-handed. He plays tricks by threatening to them not to pay out the money if they don’t earn more money. Often they are very afraid of him. Anyway read for yourself because I have made some translations so everybody can read a part of it in English. Very important.

Also notice that this file is mainly about taxes that the pimp still has to pay to the state and not necessarily about human trafficking!!!! Such a big crime, the government also needs its fair share.

One notice. I’m struggling to translate from Dutch to English. There are words with no direct translation. Like “aangifte” or “aangeven”. It strictly means: reporting the crime or the criminal or the accused to the police. I don’t know an English word for it. It doesn’t mean denouncing or accusing or press charges. A big problem.

So, now the new story. As a very last extra. Because visiting all these prostitutes again makes me a total moron and totally not trustworthy. You know I actually was on de Wallen lately and visited one of these Eastern European women? Luckily the Slovakian woman was 34 years old. Hopefully too old for the pimps to be of interest to extort. In the back of my mind I really do believe human trafficking is just a myth. These girls are so cool. They smile all the time. They are so happy to see me. How can they possibly be forced? I’m lost and doomed. So for now, this will probably will be one of my last posts. The end of the search. No human trafficking.

This case is labelled LJN: BJ7965
On 8 October 2003 five women of the Russian nationality reported [the perpetrator] to the police at R. They accused the person involved of human trafficking. In account of that a criminal law investigation is started that led to the arrest of the party involved.

Miss A, has, as a suspect, on 19 and 21 November 2004 and on 10, 15 and 16 December 2004, stated the following amongst other things:
“(...) I came to the Netherlands three years ago. Before that I worked in S in a supermarket. In that supermarket I came into contact with a man and a woman who told me that I could earn a lot of money in the Netherlands if I would go to work in prostitution.
(...) The visa came into force starting from 1 December 2001 (...) I earn on average per day in any case 500 Euro. (...) You show me a picture of a man. I know this man as X (note reporting officers: shown is a photo of X born at Q on xx/09/19xx.)
(…) It is true that Russian girls often work in prostitution on a 50% basis.
(…) I’m very afraid of X. (…) B also told it was on a 50/50 basis. I had to give the money myself to X. I delivered all my earned money. X always sent half of the delivered money to my mother in Russia. The other half of the money he kept for himself. (…) B said that I had to work 7 days a week. (…) You ask me what there was to happen if I for example wouldn’t work for a week. I didn’t dare to take a day off because B said that I had to work. (…) If the boss said that I had to work then I went working, even if I didn’t like to. (…) X was the boss. I did what he said. (…) I asked X if I could go home, to Russia I mean. X allowed me to go but then I had to arrange another girl first, to keep the room occupied. (…) X also had boys working for him. These boys for example picked up girls and these boys collected money from the girls. These were a kind of errand boys for him. I remember also that C worked for him. C also picked up girls from Germany who were on their way from Russia to the Netherlands to work in prostitution for X. (…) X really was the chief. (…) I also want to testify that I actually have taken over the role that B had first. B also didn’t do this work voluntarily. She also was under a lot of pressure. I instructed the girls, also the girls who came new. I also made sure the money came to X.
(…) You ask me about D. (…) I had to tell D how the activities were and what was expected from D. I got that order from X. I believe that D came around May 2003. I was already in the Netherlands for one and a half years. About the earnings I can tell you that X ordered me to collect the money from the girls. (…) When I came to the Netherlands it was told me that I could be battered and sold if I didn’t do what was told to me. So I did everything what X ordered me. (…) E agreed with D that she also was going to work on a fifty-fifty basis. I worked together with D in R. I also have collected money from the girls and gave that to X. The girls had to hand over all money to X. X then counted the money. X then sent the money to home, to Russia. I have never seen proof of that. X also did send some money for me to my home. I don’t know if X has sent money over of other girls. It went like this. If we worked we bought cigarettes and food and things that we needed. We all wrote it on a memorandum block. X examined it and got the rest, so all the money that we had left. X then determined what was 50% for us. (…) I sometimes gave every day, but every now and then also every other day my money to X. Thus I earned 3500 Euro per week.
(…) Furthermore you have questions about F. (…) I also have told F that 50% of her earned money went to X. (…) I still work for X. I’m not able to work in prostitution without X. (…) You ask me if X had me in his power. I can only confirm that. I have done everything like X told me to do. F has worked in R.
(…) Furthermore you ask me about G. (…) C has brought her to R and I have picked up G from the station. (…) C probably worked for X. I also know that C also collected money every now and then from R. X had made a phone call with me and he told me that another would come to collect our money. (…) C and X had told her how she had to work. (…) I have also told other girls that they had to maintain a memorandum block with their earning and expenditures. Also under orders of X. (…) I was also given an order by X to keep an eye on the girls.
(…) I know F from Russia. (…) F came end of May beginning of June 2003 to the Netherlands to work (…) X told that we must refuse certain men. (…) There was a threat emanating from X. (…) F had to give the earned money to me. I gave this money again to X or to C.
(…) H I know also. I also broke her in on T in R. (…) I know that she first worked for X. (…) I have also heard that she later worked for another pimp. Perhaps X has given her away or sold her.
(…) I know that a girl ‘I’ together with H came to the Netherlands. (…) Also from her I collected the earned money and delivered it to X or C. G and I also have told this girls that she had to listen well to what X wanted. (…) (Reporting officers: we confront her with several conversations) (conversation number 240063890) I can remember this conversation well. It is a conversation between X and me. Our conversation is about the girls J (fon). (…) She had to maintain a bookkeeping of the income. I had to control her. (…) (conversation number 240063925) (…) This was the first time for me that I came in touch with a false passport. X had given her the passport. This was a possibility to stay here in the Netherlands. Another possibility was a residence permit. And you only get that if you are married here with a Dutch man. (…) I was married in Russia with K on xx October 2003. (…) It was a marriage for the residence permit. I had agreed with X that after the marriage I had to work for him for another year. After this, I would be free, that was the agreement. (…)”

2.3.2 Miss F, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 8 and 17 October 2003, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…) My pimp is a Bulgarian man with the name X and he is xx years old. (…) These three are the petty thieves who deliver X the goods. End June, 28 or 29 June, 2003 I came to the Netherlands. (…) In Germany I phoned a second man of the pimp. This man was named C. (…) A then brought me to the U centre and there I met X. (…) I hand over 50% of my earnings to my pimp X. (…) I feel intimidated by X and I didn’t dare to say “no” to him. I was very dependent on him. (…) The term to work for X is six months. If I say now to X that I’m going to stop with the work, then I’m obligated to search a new girl for X as a replacement for me. If I don’t fulfill that obligation and I would return to Russia, then X has people in the city S (Russia).
(…) It wish to report human trafficking/women trafficking by a Bulgarian man known as X. (…) C and I went back to the first station where D still stood with the luggage and together we then again travelled to the second station to take the train to the Netherlands. (…) In Russia G already told me that I was going to work on a 50/50 basis. Of what amount this would be I didn’t know. First I had to pay off my debts, the costs made for the trip and such. (…) The money that I earned I had to deliver to A. A then made sure the money reached X. The first month that I worked X still wasn’t there and so A brought the money to C. (…) So X turned up approximately a month later, I believe it was around July 28 2003, in the sex house on T in R. (…) That evening I gave my earned money to X. (…) After this, I regularly brought the money to X in V. (…) Since August I travelled on average 1 or 2 times a week to V to hand over the earned money of the girls to X. I always travelled by train then. On average I took 6000 Euro or more with me then. I then called to him and said that I was coming. We then agreed to meet in a café and there we met each other. X then gave me his little bag and I went with that little bag to the toilet. There I brought out the money and the “bookkeeping” and put it in that little bag. (…) With bookkeeping I mean bits of paper from a memorandum book on which the girls wrote down their earnings and spending of that week. (…) Once I had brought 6000 Euro for 8 days working. X then asked me why this was so little and besides that he said that he had a girl working in V who earned 14000 Euro on her own. He said that he wouldn’t send more money to our family if we wouldn’t earn more. After this, he indeed never sent money to our families again. (…) I must also tell you that most of the telephones that we got of X to use are stolen telephones. (…)”

2.3.3 Miss F, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 23 October 2003, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…) I wish to report about human trafficking c.q. women trafficking perpetrated by an organization that recruited women in Russia to work as a prostitute in the Netherlands. One of the members of this organization is named X and that was my pimp in the Netherlands. (…) On 26 May 2003 we arrived in Berlin. (…) It turned out that C was standing somewhere else and the G then picked up C with a taxi. (…) On 27 May 2003 around 15:00 we arrived by train in R. (…) (…)I saw that A gave lots of money underneath the table to C. I believe this was money that was paid for me. I don’t believe these were earning that had to be handed in, because later I understood that this was done in a different way. (…) A also gave me a memorandum block that I could use to keep track of my earnings and spending. (…) I also have to tell you that I earned 10.000 Euro during the first month. This money I handed over to the pimp. (…) (…) In that restaurant we ate somewhat and F and the pimp drank beer. (…) He reassured us and he told that he also had problems (…) He succeeded in solving that and he was in this business since 9 years. (…) I still have a note on which the pimp calculated what I had earned. I hereby give you that note to make a copy. I will explain to you what it means. 7561 is the amount that I had totally earned that month (July). 2540 is a number that I don’t understand and what the other girls also don’t understand. This amount he always deducts from my earnings. This way I was left with 5021. This he divided by 2. Then 2510 was left. From that the pimp deducts 1390 (the money that I still owed him) and then you are left with 1120 Euro. (…) The pimp did often call me. He wasn’t satisfied about me. (…) I got afraid of him. (…) He continuously supervised me. (…) You ask me who all worked for the pimp. These are in our sex house G, F, little L, I, E, M and A. (…) The pimp told me also that in other cities he also had girls working. (…) I also know from another girl, named H that she had worked for our pimp and that he had molested her and had sold her to another pimp, an Albanian. (…) As long as I work in R, I have earned a gross income of 25.000 Euro. (…) When I then calculate that then I have, during the time I worked for the pimp, earned a net 18400 Euro. In total 3000 Euro was sent to my mother. Thus the pimp has snatched more than 15000 Euro from me,(…) I will give you a description of our pimp. According to F the pimp is named X of X.(…)”

2.3.4. Miss G, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 23 October 2003, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…) I believe he then already phoned my current pimp. This a Bulgarian with many names. He is named X and X amongst other names. (…) In Cologne I was awaited by a man. This was a Bulgarian named C. C is a friend of X. (…) The next day X and I were driven to my workplace. Later it turned out to me that this was R. (…) I have already told that I had to share my earned money with my pimp X. (…) Every girl has a memorandum block on which she notes down what she earns per day and what she spends. (…) In total I have earned approximately 50000 Euro. (…) If I count it all again I see that X has earned approximately 35000 Euro of me. (…) X controlled us via the telephone. (…)
“I speak in my testimony about other girls. I mean with this the girls who worked for X in R. These are D, 2 F/L, “I”, myself and H. (…) Also H and G and E have worked for X, but they aren’t there anymore now. You ask what’s the role of C. I believe he’s just an assistant of X. (…) I can also tell you that X has told me that in V and in yet another, unknown place to me, he had girls working in prostitution.(…)”

2.3.5. Miss I, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 9 and 30 October 2003, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…)On 6 March 2003 I travelled with the bus from Russia to the Netherlands. (…) Later that second man turned out to be “X”. (…) G told me that I worked in the U Centre on a basis of 50%. G told me that I had to hand over 50% of the money to X. X is my pimp. (…) I earn here on average 6000 Euro per month. Of that 6000 Euro I pay the expenses. Then I’m left with approximately 4800 Euro. Of that X must have 50%. (...) I handed over the money to G. G then turned over the money, 50% of my earnings, to X. (…) The period after that, I did everything what X wanted from me. I was very afraid. I felt that my life was in danger. X phoned me regularly.
(…) I earned in the beginning of the month an astounding 10.000 Euro. (…) The second photo is a photo of G from S. She has a double role. Formerly she also worked in R, but now she is back to S where she recruits girls for the work in R. (…) I think that this G and X, my pimp, work together because she takes care that my pimp gets girls from S. (…) According to G and A everything was for sale for money. Also murder. (…) C took us with her with the train to V. (…) The only thing I knew is that G told me that H wasn’t good and that the pimp H sold her to another pimp. (…) The next girls worked for X in R. These are G, A and E, two F/L and D from S, G and me from Yoskar-Ola. Also H worked for X.(…)”

2.3.6. Miss H, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 29 October 2003, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…)The man in Cologne told that he was the assistant of X and that he was named C. (…) When we on the first evening, on Monday 10 March 2003, were in W I saw that G came (…) In those three weeks I earned 4100 Euro. All the money that I earned I had to hand over to G. (…) G then brought the money to the station in R. C received the money on the station. I was present during one of these transfers in the hall of the station. (…) C and G told me that I had to earn at least 400 Euro a day. I got to hear this every day again. (…) I then made the choice that I would be sold to the friend of X. (…) So I was sold to N for 1500 Euro. (…) I can describe X the following way: First of all the X also uses the name X. (…)”

2.3.7. Miss F, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 10 October 2003, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…) I arrived on 12 August 2003 during the evening in V. (…) I had to write down in a memorandum block what I earned (…) The agreement in advance was that I could keep half of my earned money and that the other half was supposed to be for my pimp. I had agreed this with G and A. In the Netherlands however it turned out to me that I had to hand over all my money. During the first two months that I work here I have earned 17000 Euro in total. Of that I had to pay 7 weeks of rent and I had approximately 750 Euro in expenses. So you can calculate that I had given more than 14000 Euro to E and that she had given that to the pimp. (…) You ask me what kind of punishments the pimp gave. He molested and threatened the girls and also he had financial punishments. I know of a girl that she secretly phoned her mother and that the pimp then withheld 500 Euro of her earned money. (…) The last day that I worked the pimp had yet threatened that he wouldn’t send money to Russia if every girl didn’t earn at least 500 Euro per day. So I officially still don’t know ever how my pimp is named. Of these other girls I have heard that the pimp is named X or X. (…)”

2.3.8. Miss B, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 29 November 2004, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…)So according to G I could earn within some 1,5 years 35.000 Euro. (…) On 28 October 2004 around 01:00 hours I arrived in V. (…) I didn’t go to R yet, because my false passport wasn’t ready yet. (…)”

Furthermore Miss B, has, as a person who reported a crime to the police, on 30 November 2004, testified the following amongst other things:
“(…) Of the money that A and G earned, they had to give half to “the man”. I don’t know what happened to the rest of the money. At that time that I resided in the house there was a closet in the living room. In that closet was a book. In that book A and G wrote down their earnings. The money that they had earned they put in that notebook that lay in the closet. “That man” didn’t come by every day. But when “the man” came, then he went to the closet. I have never seen what “that man” exactly took out of that.(…) A and G had told me that working on a 50/50 basis was a good agreement, because a number of girls worked on the basis of a 30/70, so of which they themselves were only allowed to keep 30%. Another arrangement was 40/60. (…) A, G and I had heard that “the man” was arrested by the police. A and G were on the workplace. I was home alone with “the boy”. (…) I saw that “the boy” flushed little pieces of paper through the toilet and put stuff in a plastic bag. The content of the pieces of paper I hadn’t seen. (…) G told me that “the man” had told her that she should be easily able to earn 1000 Euro a day in V in prostitution. Irina had earned less than those 1000 Euro and that’s why she was afraid for “that man”.(…)”

2.3.9 During the hearing in the first instance the Inspector handed over a report of 23 December 2004, from which it turns out that as a suspect miss G is interrogated. She has testified amongst other things:
“(…) I came in December 2001 to the Netherlands and have worked 1 month that year. In 2002 I have worked 11 months. In 2003 I have worked 4 months. (…) In 2004 I have worked another 1 week approximately. (…) I estimate that I earned per week approximately 2000 Euro cash. Here already the expenses that I had to make were deducted for rent for the room, gel, condoms, lingerie, make-up, food, cigarettes, etc. I really was left with on average a net 2000 Euro a week. For 65 weeks of working this comes to an amount of 130.000 Euro. Of that money I had to hand over to X in total approximately 100.000 Euro. (…) We can assume that X on average had 6 girls working the period end 2001 until the day he was arrested by the police. I even believe it were more. (…) I know of G that she and B, who later also worked in Y, in any case has worked for a year in Z for X. Also two other girls have worked during that period for him in Z, but I don’t know him by name. Also these girls have earned a lot of money for him.
